The first publications on anesthesia in Turkiye belonged to physicians from various surgical specialties who gave importance and interest to anesthesia. The first publication on the use of ether was by Miralay Dr. Ahmet Bey’s textbook titled ‘Medical Curriculum’ (1871). This was followed by Münif Bey’s article titled ‘On Chloroform’.

In 1882, Dr. Munir, Dr. Abidin and  in 1891 Dr Hüseyin Bey and the Obstetrics Clinic surgeon Dr. Besim Ömer Pasha has publications on anesthesia under the name Mubtel-i Hissi, which means removal of sensation instead of anesthesia.

When Cemil Topuzlu Pasha returned to the country in 1890 after his education in Paris, he started using chloroform. Topuzlu Pasha used chloroform until 1924, and then started using ether anesthesia.

Ether anesthesia was first applied in our country in 1898 by Rieder Pasha, who came from Germany to establish the Gülhane Military Application School.  During this period, Cemil Topuzlu, Besim Ömer Akalın, Orhan Abdi Kurtaran, Rıza Nur, Burhanettin Toker, Kazım İsmail Gürkan, Akif Şakir Şakar, Ahmed Asım Onur, Halit Ziya Konuralp made significant contributions to the development and establishment of anesthesia, both with their practices and writings.

The first advanced anesthesia device was brought to Istanbul Medical Faculty 1st Surgery Clinic in 1937 by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Nissen. However, this device could not be used at that time because there was no user other than corporals Hasan and Hüseyin, who could only perform ether anesthesia. In 1948, a device that allowed closed system nitrogen protoxide anesthesia was purchased at the Faculty of Medicine, 1st Surgery Clinic, upon the request of the director, Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Toker. The use of the device was given to Dr Sadi Sun, a surgical assistant, by Prof Dr Toker.

The first endotracheal anesthesia applications were performed by Burhaneddin Toker and Sadi Sun in 1949.

For the first time in 1950, with the official application letter he wrote to the then Minister of Health Ekrem Hayri Üstündağ, Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Toker requested that the specialty of anesthesia be accepted as soon as possible. 5 years later, the Ministry of Health, with its decision dated January 3, 1955 and numbered 3239, announced that “an anesthesiology internship will be held with Anesthesiologist Dr. Wolfgang Wirtinger at Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital” and that “the period until the date when anesthesiology will be accepted as a specialization branch will be counted as an anesthesiology assistantship period”.

Dr. Wirtinger, who came to Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital in 1954, established the first anesthesiology service in Turkey. The first assistant of this service and the Ministry of Health was Dr Cemalettin Öner, and later Dr Moiz Kan started working in the same service. From 1949 to 1954, Dr. Hüsnü Öztürk, Dr. Simon Batmaz, Dr. Melih Erhan, Dr. Rüçhan Kutbay, Dr. Cemalettin Öner, Dr. Hüseyin Ergönenç, Dr. Kadriye Bilge, Dr. Cahit Bergil, Dr. Ercüment Kopman, Dr. İhsan Günalp, Dr. Hüsrev Polat and Emel Çobanoğlu are among the first to work in the field of anesthesia.

Finally, anesthesiology was included in the Specialization Regulation on January 20, 1956. Thus, the first pioneers of this branch have now officially started to receive their specialization diplomas. The first two of these are Dr. Sadi Sun at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine with the thesis titled “Anesthesia with Trichloroethylene” in March 1956, and Dr. Cemalettin Öner from the Ministry of Health with the thesis titled “Potentialize Anesthesia” in December 1956.

The Anesthesiology Society, which was founded in 1956, was renamed the “Anesthesiology and Reanimation Society” in 1972. The use of the name ‘Turkish’ in the name of the association was allowed by the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 24.1.1975 and numbered 7-9349. The headquarters of the association is in Gümüşsuyu, Istanbul.
